Every year, since 1991, the Clay Soil & Water Conservation District commissioners have had a tree sale. With the money raised, the commissioners:
- provide scholarships to area youth
- provide financial support for Envirothon
- hold a field day for 6th graders in Clay County
- provide monetary awards for our poster contest

Red Oak Tree
-fastest growing of oaks
-Grows 75-100’ feet tall
-will tolerate moist soil
Oak is the state tree. The legislation naming the Iowa state tree did not specify a particular variety of oak tree. Among the 60 or so species of oak, 13 are native to the state of Iowa. They are among the most abundant and valuable trees. Click here to learn more about the Red Oak tree.

All schools in Clay County, grades Kindergarten through 6th, are invited to participate in Conservation Poster contest sponsored by Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance and Conservation Districts of Iowa. The Clay County Soil & Water Conservation District provides poster board to schools in Clay County requesting to participate. The Clay County SWCD also provides prizes for all Clay County winners in the amount of $25 for first place in each grade, $10 for second place in each grade, and $5 for honorable mention in each grade Kindergarten through 6th. Posters of overall winners of each Division are forwarded for regional, state, and possibly national competition. The 2010 topic for posters, which is selected by Grinnell and CDI, was “Conservation Habits = Healthy Habitats”. We wish to thank WalMart for making a $50 donation toward the cost of the poster board.

***Molly Crew and Rebecca Stallcup from Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School were overall winners in their Divisions (K-1st Grades, and 2nd & 3rd Grades). Their posters were sent on for Regional competition.

The above are the three Clay County Soil & Water Conservation District scholarship winners for 2009.
Bradly is the son of David and Sue Brugman. He attends Iowa State University and has a double major of Agricultural Business and Economics.
Morgan is the son of Allen and Javotte McCarty. He attends Iowa State University and is majoring in Construction Engineering and pursuing a minor in Agronomy.
Bradley is the son of Greg and Tamra Jones. He attends South Dakota State University and is majoring in Fisheries/Wildlife Biology.
